Modern handball

Handball is originally from Denmark and Germany in 1900. This sport came to Iceland in 1922, as can be seen in this link, and has been played here for over 100 years. But modern handball on the other hand did not start until 1955 to 1960 when European countries began to use a system of play similar to that used in American football. In Iceland, these game systems were introduced by coach Karli G. Benediktsson.

He changed these football game system ins to a handball game system. Karl got this idea when he had been studying in the United States. This system proved to be successful against other teams and then other European teams also started using the system in their game.

How is handball played?

In handball, two teams of seven play against each other. There are six outfield players and one goalkeeper. In defense, the other six stand outside the box and try to block the opponents’ attack. In attack they attack the other goal and try to get the ball into the opponents’ goal.

Team members may not take more than three steps without dribbling the ball and may not hold the ball without passing or shooting for more than three seconds. Each team has two corner backs, two shooters, one midfielder, one lineman and one goaltender.

Handball and NFL

Handball is in many ways similar to NFL, American football (see image number 2). Then not just out of the game systems. Corner players in handball need to be quick to run and good at catching, just like runners in American football. Then the defense has to be tight and strong like a football defense so that the opponents’ attackers do not get past or hit the ball in the right direction.

Quarterback in handball need to be quick to get through the opposition’s defenses and managed the game system on the field, just like in the NFL. Handball players also need to be able to make accurate passes across the court.

So there are all sorts of similarities between handball and American football.
