Grýla

Grýla is the mother of Icelandic yule lads and lives with them in her cave. She is a horrible cannibal troll and eats children if they don’t behave. She chases the children and stuffs them into her bag and takes them to her cave to boil them in her pot. Her appearance is such that she’s very large as normal trolls are but she has hooves instead of feet and sometimes tails then she is sometimes said to have horns.

 

Jólakötturinn (The Christmas cat) 

Another christmas character  from Iceland  is a very big cat which is a very special animal. His name is Jólakötturinn or the Christmas cat and he will eat people if they don’t get new clothes for Christmas. No one did not know where he came from or where he went, people only knew that he attacked people especially poor people if they didn’t get new legs by Christmas and then ate their Christmas dinner too. The cat did not look at mice and if you heard him, you were in danger

 

Krampus

Krampus is a creature from Central European folklore. He is described as a demonic creature with horns, hooves and a tail. it is because he is half goat and half demon standing upright with a very long tongue and sometimes has chains on his hands with jingling bells. Krampus is also a Santa’s comrade and they go together before Christmas and give gifts to children fifth of December or at least Santa. Krampus does not give gifts to children but punishes children and scares them if they are not obedient and good. He sometimes hits the children or takes them in his bag and takes them to hell or drowns them.

 

Zwarte Piet 

Santa’s other companion is called Zwarte Piet or Black Pete, which comes from folklore in the Netherlands (Holland and Belgium). He is supposed to be from Spain. Zwarte Piet is a character who is black man or boy and with red lipstick and a colorful Renaissance costume as well as a curly wig. Zwarte Piet usually gives sweets to good children and entertains them but punishes children if they misbehave. When Zwarte Pie punishes the children, he sometimes threatens them by saying that if they are not obedient, he will take them in his bag to his homeland Spain or let them work in his workshop
